Streamlining space missions: Four software developments by SpaceApps

29/11/23

Central in Space Applications Services’s product portfolio are software tools built on the back of years of researching technologies and applications for space exploration.

  • While front-facing events such as rocket launches usually receive more attention and acclaim, the criticality of software to space missions cannot be underscored enough. SpaceApps contributes to this essential area and develops software for different domains of the space industry. These four tools demonstrate the extent of our innovation in software development.

    MOSAIC

For missions that involve fleets of robotic agents collaborating to achieve particular goals, MOSAIC is a powerful solution. It is a multi-robot mission control centre software that serves as an integrated solution for multi-robot mission planning, control, data management, and post-processing analysis. At the heart of MOSAIC, advanced planning algorithms and real-time monitoring help optimising task allocation across heterogenous robotic platforms, giving instant insights into agent status and mission progress. Another plus – it can operate as an all-in-one cloud-based application, or as a standalone solution. For future missions in the space, defence and naval industries that involve multiple robotic agents that must work together, MOSAIC is a game-changer.

    Automated Services Builder (ASB)

ASB is a platform and application agnostic solution to Big Data processing. It is a platform used to build integrated, inter-operational data processing ecosystems. It is designed for defining, managing and executing complex heterogenous processing chains using widely distributed data and processing resources. For big data sets gathered from Earth Observation activities, ASB can be a valuable breakthrough for an integrated processing effort for developers, end-users and other players. ASB can handle preliminary algorithms to test, or ones that are ready to be used to create a systematic highly scalable big data processing service.

    Operations Planning Tool (OPT)

OPT has efficiency at its core. It provides an efficient and centralised way to plan and execute complex shared systems, such as spacecraft platforms, drop towers or scientific laboratories. As a collaborative tool, OPT enables stakeholders to coordinate and plan the use of a shared system. Each user can prescribe their intended use and capabilities required. Functioning as a confusion-averse tool, OPT integrates the intended uses, assess feasibility and supports human intervention to resolve conflicting use. Its applications are not only limited to space systems operations planning, but also to aviation, maritime and nuclear operations planning.

    Yamcs

Yamcs sets the pulse of mission control by functioning as a flexible, scalable, and open source software framework for command and control of spacecraft, satellites, rovers, payloads, ground stations and ground equipment. It is lightweight, easily configurable and not hardware dependent. Yamcs serves a range of purposes, with the primary being telemetry reception, telecommand sending, alarm generation and replay processing. All this is supported by a comprehensive user interface that allows an operator to quickly access all Yamcs data functionalities. Serving the payloads, free-flying craft and launchers markets, it offers a bouquet of services consisting of a server, application, studio and much more. Yamcs is broadly adopted worldwide, and has already been used in a number of critical space missions and operations.
