2025 Year in Review: From Low Earth Orbit to the Lunar South Pole

23/12/25

As we close out 2025, the transition toward a sustainable, commercial space economy has moved from a vision into an operational reality. For Space Applications Services, Aerospace Applications North America, and the ICE Cubes Service, this year was defined by a shift toward long-term infrastructure. By securing a stake in the next generation of space stations and maturing our lunar surface platforms, we are helping to build the systems that will support human presence in orbit and beyond for decades to come.

  • Key Milestones and Operations

A Stake in the Future of LEO: Starlab

We officially joined the Starlab joint venture as a strategic partner and equity owner. This commitment ensures a seamless transition from the ISS to commercial platforms as we bring our experience in avionics and mission operations to the core of Starlab’s architecture. Read more

    Lunar Surface Access: LUVMI-M

The roadmap for our first commercial lunar mission is now live. Scheduled for 2028, LUVMI Mission 1 will head to the Moon’s south pole. Driven by our Yamcs mission control software, this mission provides a turnkey solution for customers looking to land science and technology payloads on the lunar surface. Read more

Simulating the Moon at DLR’s LUNA

To support the next generation of explorers, we are delivering a mobile gravity off-loading system to the DLR LUNA facility. This hardware allows astronauts and engineers to test movements and equipment in a high-fidelity environment that mimics lunar gravity here on Earth.

Crew Health on the Gateway: NEX4EX-G

Under a new ESA contract, we are developing the NEX4EX-G exercise system for the Lunar Gateway. Maintaining physical health is critical for deep space missions, and our system integrates advanced resistive training with real-time sensorimotor data to protect crews in transit. Read more

Logistics and Prospecting: The LPSR Rover

We successfully closed Phase 1 for the Lunar Prospecting and Scouting Rover. This design is a cornerstone of ESA’s strategy for resource utilization because it is built to handle the rugged logistics of long-term lunar habitation. Read more

The Broader Ecosystem: Training, Defense, and Software

Beyond these flagship missions, our teams have hit dozens of other milestones across our specialized service lines. Our Astronaut Training Services continue to prepare the next generation of flyers, while our Media Set capabilities are redefining how mission data and visuals are captured. On the technology front, Yamcs has further solidified its position as the industry standard for mission control, and our Defense projects have expanded to address critical needs.

ICE Cubes: Reliable Access to the ISS

The ICE Cubes service continued its high-tempo manifest by deploying multidisciplinary payloads to the International Space Station. From AI-driven research to life sciences and educational outreach, we continue to lower the barrier for entry to microgravity research. Read more

    Looking Toward 2026

Our focus for the coming year is grounded in execution. We are expanding our U.S. presence, transitioning Yamcs to a cloud-native platform, and accelerating the commercial availability of our lunar logistics services. Space is no longer just a destination for exploration; it is a place for sustainable business and a permanent human presence.
