Qatar University, Metavisionaries & the ICE Cubes Service Launch Global Sustainability Space Challenge

05/09/22

Qatar University, Metavisionaries and the ICE Cubes Service (by Space Applications Services) announced the launch of the Global Sustainability Space Challenge 2022, this September the 5th 2022.

  • The challenge, supported by Space Applications Services, International Space University, and Blue Origin’s Club for the Future, will run from September to November of 2022 and will leverage the momentum of FIFA World Cup happening in Qatar this year – the first one in history to receive International Sustainability Certificate – from late-November to mid-December.

In a world that is increasingly fast moving, unpredictable and full of opportunities, the global challenge comes with big ambitions – find new, high impact solutions to foster a sustainable future. This first edition of the Challenge is part of a bigger endeavour aiming at building a network of innovation laboratories around the world, starting first with Qatar University. “Our ultimate goal with the Challenge is to empower students and to foster initiatives within university laboratories that give access to the new space economy and frontier technologies,” said Wasim Ahmed, CEO of Metavisionaries.

The Global Sustainability Space Challenge is a competition focused on integrating space into global entrepreneurial solutions for earth and humankind. Participants from all over the world are given the opportunity to utilise space for innovative solutions that tackle global sustainability challenges in any of the 5 SDG-related areas: Climate Solutions Track (SDG 13), Sustainable Food & Agriculture Track (SDG 2), Life Science & Healthcare Track (SDG 3), Sustainable Consumption and Production Track (SDG 12), Sustainable Arts, Fashion & 3D Printing Track.

“To empower students and to foster initiatives within university laboratories that give access to the new space economy and frontier technologies”

Global, multicultural and multidisciplinary teams of 4-6 participants or individual participants, of ages between 16-26 years old, from around the world can join the competition free of charge. World renowned mentors, an introductory webinar and a series of live workshops with a Metavisionaries Hackathon in the metaverse environment will be organised to support  the teams. 20 finalist teams will be selected and compete for the Grand Prize. The winners of the Global Sustainability Space challenge will be announced from the International Space Station.

“We need to keep pushing for paradigm shifts in business education to further the cause of sustainabillity. Through this competition and with the help of our partners, we will bring together the visionaries and leaders of tomorrow, be they scientists, entrepreneurs, policy makers, activists, creative thinkers, artists to explore space for sustainability on earth,” added Dr.  Rana Sobh, Dean of the College of Business & Economics at Qatar University.
