Systems and Ground Segment

The Systems and Ground Segment Group has projects in the following areas:

  • Spacecraft System and Mission Operations engineering.
  • Design and implementation of Ground Segment solutions.
    • Complete spacecraft ground segments including antenna, control centre, mission control system, planning and scheduling, EGSE, simulator, payload data processing and archive, etc.
    • Complete distributed robot control, planning and scheduling systems for fixed and mobile robots in structured and unstructured environments.

The following lists some of the projects performed under the responsibility of the S&GS group:

  • PROBA-1 - PRoject for On-Board Autonomy - The Ground Segment of  PROBA, the first Belgian satellite mission in operations since October 2001 at Redu (B).

  • VIEW-FINDER - A Base Station for monitoring and control of tele-operated robots equipped with chemical sensors that assist fire and rescue services in CBRN missions.

  • GUARDIANS - A remote Base Station for the supervision and control of a swarm of semi-autonomous robots assisting fire fighters during their rescue missions.

  • ROBOT@CWE  - A study and prototype for an advanced system supporting humanoid robot-human collaboration scenarios for space exploration, assembly and construction.

  • FAMOUS - Flexible Automation Monitoring and Operation User Station - A ground Base Station supporting preparation and execution of space-based robotics missions.

  • PSPE - Payload Support for Planetary Exploration - A rover Base Station including Terrain Modeling with DEM and texture, 3D Visualization and automatic Path Planning for rover missions on Mars.

  • SAFERDRILL -  A Portable Wireless Human Machine Interface (HMI) for remotely controlling a drilling robot used for stabilising risky slopes in a hazardous environment.

  • EXOSTATION -  A technology demonstrator for the Base Station of  a virtual slave robot controlled in a virtual environment by an exoskeleton arm master robot.

  • TAPAS - TAsk Planner for Automation & robotics in Space - An interactive tool for planning and scheduling the activities of a robot-tended payload facility.

  • ATOS-3 AMPI - Advanced Mission Planning Infrastructure -  A software components toolbox standardizing and simplifying the development of Mission Planning Systems.

  • TS-L MPP - TerraSAR-L Mission Planning Prototype -  Analysis of TerraSAR-L mission planning requirements and prototyping of the Mission Planning System.

  • Earth Explorer Missions Phase A  -  A study for the Ground Segment definition of the core missions EarthCARE, SPECTRA and WALES and opportunity mission SWARM.

  • ExoMars Mission Phase A - A study for the definition of the operations and ground segment activities performed in support of a Mars Rover Mission.

  • HMI-CSTS -  A prototype of the Human Machine Interface (HMI) components for the cockpits of the Soyuz TMA and future CSTS spacecrafts.

  • X38/CRV - A collaboration with ESA and NASA for prototyping the Human Machine Interface (HMI) components of the X-38 spacecraft's cockpit.

  • ATV DV - Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) Derived Vehicle -  A study of the adaptations required on the ATV vehicle for performing microgravity experiments with lower disturbances than on the International Space Station (ISS).

  • VRS - Virtual Reality Stimulator - A platform supporting preparation and validation of Virtual Reality stimuli based experiment protocols in the fields of cognitive neurophysiology.

  • WEAR - WEarable Augmented Reality - A light-weight, wearable Augmented Reality system providing ‘location-based’ information visualization for ground and space applications.

  • AD4 - A prototype of 3D and 4D Human Machine Interface (HMI) for Air Traffic Management (ATM) applications enabling optimal decision support with predictive technology.

  • 3D-2D -  A study and prototype for the establishment of  innovative data visualisation paradigms for Air Traffic Management (ATM) applications.

  • INTUITION - A contribution into the "Virtual Reality and Virtual Environments Applications for Future Workspaces" Network Of Excellence (NOE) for identifying requirements applicable to the domains of space, neuroscience and medical applications.
